vot- (Latin: vow, affirm; from votum).votary:
1. A person bound by vows to live a life of religious worship or service; a devout adherent of a cult or religion; a committed worshiper; as "the votaries of Aphrodite".
2. A person who is filled with enthusiasm, as for a pursuit or hobby; an enthusiast. vote:
A formal expression of preference for a candidate for office or for a proposed resolution of an issue; a means by which such a preference is made known, such as, "a raised hand or a marked ballot".
votive:
1. Given, or dedicated in fulfillment of a vow or pledge; such as, "a votive offering".
2. Expressing or symbolizing a wish, desire, or vow; as, "a votive prayer"; "votive candles". vow:
An ernest promise to perform a specified act or to behave in a certain manner; especially a solemn promise to live and act in accordance with the rules of a religious order; such as, "to take the vows of a nun.".
The word, avow:
To acknowledge openly, boldly, and unashamedly; to confess: "avow guilt" does NOT come from the same Latin source as vow. It is based on Latin, vocare, "to call".
