2. Expressing or symbolizing a wish, desire, or vow; as, "a votive prayer"; "votive candles".

An ernest promise to perform a specified act or to behave in a certain manner; especially a solemn promise to live and act in accordance with the rules of a religious order; such as, "to take the vows of a nun.".

To acknowledge openly, boldly, and unashamedly; to confess: "avow guilt" does NOT come from the same Latin source as vow. It is based on Latin, vocare, "to call".
