According to Dossey, there are about 17 to 21 million Americans suffering from some form of fear of Friday the 13th. . . . we can see that customs in our culture constantly reinforce the fear of the day Friday and the number thirteen, alone and combined. And this fear surfaces in the daily lives of millions of Paraskavidekatriaphobiacs [sic] who suffer varying degrees of mental and physical symptoms.
The symptoms of paraskevidekatriaphobia can range from slight nervous giggles and mild anxiety to the excessive fear and actual physical reactions of a full blown panic attack. The indications include hyperventilation, lightheadedness, dizziness and rapid heartbeat. This can bring on the additional fear of having a heart attack.
