At the beginning of everything is the word. It is a miracle to which we owe the fact that we are human. But at the same time it is a pitfall and a test, a snare and a trial. The same word can be humble at one moment and arrogant the next. No race can prosper until it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem. The wild places are where we began. When they end, so do we. The magnificence of mountains, the serenity of nature—nothing is safe from the idiot marks of man's passing. |
