There is evidence that prehistoric people in the western United States ate grasshoppers by the millions.

Archeologists found the  remains from as many as five million hoppers" in a cave. In the 1870's, geologist-ethnologist John Wesley Powell noted that 8220;grasshoppers and crickets form a very important part of the food of these people" [Ute and Southern Paiute Indians]. "When the grasshoppers are collected they are roasted in trays like seeds and ground into meal and eaten as mush or cakes."

Acrididae is the name of a large and diverse family of insects (order Orthoptera) which consists of the locusts and true grasshoppers. There are about 7,000 species in 1,100 genera.
