pleuro-, pleur- (Greek: side, rib; a thin membrane with two layers that line the chest cavity).

One lining the outside of the lungs and the other the inside of the chest cavity; fluid between the two layers provides lubrication and so allows smooth, uniform expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing; pertaining to the side.


pleura (singular), pleurae (plural):
The serous membrane investing the lungs and lining the thoracic cavity, completely enclosing a potential space known as the pleural cavity. There are two pleurae, right and left, entirely distinct from each other. The pleura is moistened with a serous secretion that facilitates the movements of the lungs in the chest.
